Penile physiotherapy is a modern and natural treatment method applied to men experiencing erectile dysfunction. This approach aims to improve erection quality by strengthening the bulbocavernosus and ischiocavernosus muscles located at the base of the penis.
What is Penile Physiotherapy?
Traditional forms of Kegel exercises are mainly used to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles in men with urinary or fecal incontinence. Penile physiotherapy, however, specifically targets the muscles at the base of the penis. This specificity engages the mechanisms that help retain blood within the penis and allows for stronger control over the target muscles during training.
How is Penile Physiotherapy Applied?
- Clinical assessment and muscle awareness: In the first session, muscle tone and coordination are evaluated. The doctor or physiotherapist provides tactile feedback on the relevant muscle areas and teaches the patient how to consciously control the correct muscles through “contract–relax” commands.
- Manual therapy and neuromuscular training: Short, controlled contractions (e.g., 2–3 seconds) followed by full relaxation phases reinforce neuromuscular control. During treatment, contraction duration and repetitions are gradually increased.
- TENS for muscle activation: Low-dose electrical stimulation (TENS) is selectively applied to the penile base muscles. This stimulation increases the excitability of the muscles, strengthens the muscle–nerve connection, and accelerates exercise learning.
- Home exercises: Between sessions, short, regular exercises are assigned (2–3 sets per day; short contraction–long relaxation; gradually adding “sustained contractions”). The goal is to automate control over the muscles that retain blood in the penis during sexual activity.
Benefits of Penile Physiotherapy
Penile physiotherapy is a natural and effective method that can safely complement other regenerative treatments for erectile dysfunction. With regular practice, noticeable improvements in erectile function can be observed within 6–8 weeks. When applied under the supervision of an experienced urologist, it supports penile blood flow and can help achieve longer-lasting sexual performance.
