Sperm Health and Zinc
20 September 2022It is known that a series of factors affect sperm health. Many causes that we can list, such as a person's lifestyle, age, general health status, and whether they consume cigarettes and alcohol, can cause a decline in sperm quality. Although often overlooked, it is known that sperm health is closely related to nutrition. Research shows a linear relationship between sperm quality and the mineral zinc.
Zinc Deficiency and Reproductive Health
Zinc deficiency or insufficiency can cause a decline in important parameters in the health of the male reproductive system, such as testosterone (male hormone) and sperm quality. Therefore, it may be possible to optimize sperm health and support male reproductive health through ideal zinc intake via diet and/or supplements. Before going into details, I would like to convey important information regarding sperm health and zinc.
Zinc and Male Reproductive Health
Fundamentally, it must be known that zinc is one of the most necessary minerals for the functions of the male reproductive system to continue without problems. As always, scientific research lies behind this statement.
The results of these studies have shown that zinc levels in seminal plasma are positively associated with male fertility and that zinc supplementation can significantly increase semen volume, sperm motility, and the percentage of normal sperm morphology (shape).
The sperm production process (spermatogenesis) in men is continuous. It takes approximately 90 days for sperm to fully mature. Zinc, which has antioxidant properties in sperm development, has critical importance. Zinc concentration within the sperm increases as the sperm matures, and as the zinc ratio in the seminal fluid increases, sperm quality also rises.
Although it is impossible to ignore all these effects, it would not be correct to say that sperm quality will increase in every patient and under every condition by including foods containing zinc in the diet. Sperm health, as I mentioned earlier, can be affected by many variables. Zinc taken through food may not be sufficient, lifestyle choices may prevent the positive effect of zinc, or existing diseases may damage the foundations of the sperm production process. In some patients, the use of zinc supplements under physician control can be interpreted as a necessity rather than a preference.
Zinc in Men Who Smoke
Smoking, the most commonly used form of tobacco and tobacco products, significantly affects general health and reproductive health. Studies show that zinc supplementation can combat the damages of smoking on sperm quality.
Zinc, which reduces the effects of oxidative stress caused by smoking, is thought to be effective in controlling the rate of sperm with DNA damage (DNA fragmentation). Of course, using only zinc supplements does not completely eliminate the negative effects of smoking on sperm health; quitting smoking completely, treating diseases affecting sperm health, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits become the key to a sustainable effect.
Zinc Supplements in Low Testosterone
As a result of studies conducted, it has been obtained that zinc is also effective on testosterone levels; in men with low zinc levels, the use of zinc supplements increased both sperm count and testosterone levels.
One of the most fundamental causes of the decline in testosterone levels is excessive exercise. It is known that zinc supplements are effective in maintaining hormonal balance in men who make high-intensity exercises continuous and whose testosterone falls as a result.
Conclusion: Conscious Supplementation
As always, supplement use is a sensitive issue. Supplements should not be used indiscriminately, even if they contain components scientifically proven to be beneficial for health, including zinc.
Yes, in some cases, supplements enable the effective intake of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and healthy fats that the body needs due to their high concentrations; however, it is extremely important that they are not used unconsciously without analyzing blood values and without a doctor's recommendation.
