Myths and Facts About Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is the most common male sexual dysfunction worldwide. Defined as the act of ejaculation occurring before sexual intercourse begins or shortly after it starts, occurring outside the man's control and volition, premature ejaculation is a health problem requiring personalized treatment planning.

As I have stated many times before, premature ejaculation can have psychological and/or physiological causes. In light of medical developments, ejaculation time can be delayed, increasing the sexual happiness of both men and women.

Since premature ejaculation is widely seen and men tend to act on hearsay information instead of being examined by urology and andrology specialists for treatment, I wanted to prepare an article about premature ejaculation myths and facts for you.

1. Premature Ejaculation Prevents Having Children Naturally

I can say that there is some truth to this myth. Premature ejaculation occurs in two ways; while some individuals face the problem after entering sexual intercourse, others may ejaculate before sexual penetration begins.

If the man ejaculates before sexual intercourse begins, having children is not possible since the first step of the pregnancy process does not physically occur. However, if premature ejaculation occurs after sexual intercourse has started, having children is possible. Of course, at this point, it should be known that the timing of intercourse, and the quality of the man's sperm and the woman's egg are effective factors for pregnancy to occur.

2. Premature Ejaculation Is a Sexual Dysfunction Affecting Only Men

Unfortunately, this myth regarding premature ejaculation is common worldwide. Premature ejaculation may disturb the man psychologically, but it primarily prevents women from being sexually satisfied. Therefore, it is quite wrong to describe premature ejaculation as a condition affecting only men or only women. The increase in divorce cases associated with premature ejaculation in recent years sadly confirms this fact. Approaching it from this angle, I can say that premature ejaculation is a health problem affecting public health.

3. Premature Ejaculation Is Entirely Psychological

Premature ejaculation can arise due to both psychological and physiological reasons. Psychological factors such as problems in private life, excessive stress, and performance anxiety, as well as physiological factors like penile sensitivity due to faulty circumcision, hormonal disorders, and systemic diseases, can trigger premature ejaculation. Therefore, premature ejaculation treatment should be planned multi-dimensionally, and treatment options needed by the patient should be evaluated. Many prestigious medical organizations worldwide recognize premature ejaculation as a medical problem.

4. Premature Ejaculation Cannot Be Treated, There Is No Cure

Although premature ejaculation is not a sexual dysfunction that can be completely "cured" in every sense, it can be successfully managed! In recent years, many different treatment methods have ensured the delaying of ejaculation time. Premature ejaculation problems can be significantly alleviated with FDA-approved medications, local anesthetic substances, and behavioral techniques. The important thing is for everyone to go through a treatment process planned specifically for them.

5. Premature Ejaculation Is Seen Only in Young Men

The thought that premature ejaculation is seen only in young men and due to young men's masturbation habits is also just a myth. If treatment options are not evaluated when premature ejaculation becomes chronic, it may get worse with advancing age. Moreover, the problems created by premature ejaculation not only affect men's social lives but can also become a psychological trigger for the formation of another sexual dysfunction, such as erectile dysfunction.
