Does Insomnia Lower Sexual Performance in Men?

The connection between sexual performance and sleep quality is often ignored. However, insomnia and being deprived of quality sleep can negatively affect sexual performance and, moreover, general health.

It is possible to mention three main effects regarding sleep and the decline in sexual performance in men. Insomnia can cause sexual reluctance (low libido), inability to achieve an erection, or inability to maintain an erection until sexual intercourse ends. So, how do all these results come about? In this article, I will convey information about the connection between sexual performance and insomnia in men.

Insomnia Can Lead to Erectile Dysfunction

Although the circadian rhythm can vary from individual to individual, it is possible to make a general statement regarding ideal sleep duration. Many scientific studies show that adults need to sleep 7–9 hours. When this rhythm is not complied with and the ideal duration is not met, individuals' general health is significantly affected. Fatigue felt during the day, restlessness, increased risk of accidents, and concentration disorders are just some of the effects of insomnia.

Some studies show that erectile dysfunction can occur in occupational groups working in shifts. Especially when changes occur in night sleep, sexual life can be affected more than thought. Many researches show a strong link between sleep deprivation and erectile dysfunction. It is not surprising to know that erectile dysfunction is also experienced in a large proportion, such as 70%, of patients suffering from Sleep Apnea.

At this point, there is an extremely important variable that should not be ignored: Differences in the circadian rhythms of couples. While women's circadian rhythms lead to high energy in the mornings, men are more active in the evening hours. Changes in sleep patterns during shift work cause a decrease in the frequency of couples engaging in sexual intercourse or disruption of their sleep.

Quality Sleep Can Trigger Testosterone Release

The male hormone (testosterone) comes first among the most important hormones in men's general and sexual health. Produced in the testes, this hormone is involved in many processes from the development of muscle mass to sexual functions, from body hair growth to mood.

Studies show a tight bond between testosterone and sleep. In a study conducted at the University of Chicago, significant data were obtained regarding the relationship between men's sleep duration and testosterone levels. Testosterone levels were measured immediately after waking up in men who slept 4 hours and 8 hours during the night; results were reached indicating that those who slept 8 hours had higher hormone levels.

Little Sleep Can Lower Sperm Count

Sleeping less not only causes low libido and poor performance but can also lower sperm quality. According to a Danish study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, sleep deprivation lowers sperm count in men. The study results emphasize the importance of the circadian rhythm. As a result of the interruption of the natural sleep cycle, an increase in the risk of infertility in men can be experienced.
